Questions and answers
Does Nestwatch need the internet?
No. On your home network the station and listeners talk directly to each other. To listen from somewhere else, connect your devices with your own VPN such as Tailscale or WireGuard. An optional relay server for networks where that is not possible is in development.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There are no accounts. Devices trust each other after you pair them once.
How many devices can I use?
A station serves up to 8 listeners, and a listener can follow up to 8 stations at the same time, for example one per child's room.
Can I use an old phone or laptop as the station?
Yes, that is what Nestwatch is for. Keep it on the charger: a station listens all the time. Android stations keep running with the screen off; computers stay awake while a station runs (the display may still turn off).
Will it wake me for every little sound?
You choose. With sound activation, the station sends audio only while the room is louder than your threshold; a chart of the last minute shows where the background noise is. You can also listen all the time and still get an alert when sound starts.
Can I listen in a web browser?
Yes. Open the web app on this site on any computer, tablet or phone, and pair it with a station that has the relay switched on. At home you can also use the web address a computer station shows when you pair; it is served by the station itself.
Is there an iPhone app?
Not yet. The iPhone and iPad app is planned. Until then, an iPhone can listen in Safari to a computer that runs the station.
Is the camera always on?
No. The camera starts only while a listener has the camera view open, and the station shows that it is on. You can turn the camera off completely in the station settings.
Is audio or video recorded?
No. Nestwatch has no recording or history. Sound and pictures are only played live on your listeners.
Does it check my baby's breathing or health?
No. Nestwatch is not a medical device and does not replace supervision. It lets you hear, see and talk to the room, nothing more.
What does it cost?
Nothing. Nestwatch is free and open source software under the GNU AGPL.
